Class size is limited. Participants are invited to send samples of their on-the-job writing for confidential feedback. Course costs are per person and include course materials. Editing & Proofreading/Business Grammar:  Five steps to recognize and correct wordiness. Hands-on practice to update your knowledge of essential punctuation, spelling, usage, and grammar rules. A review of editing and proofreading tips to ensure mechanically correct and flawlessly professional documents.  Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on April 6, June 14, and September 14, 2018.  Time: 8:30 arrival; course time 9:00-4:30.  Fee: $350 includes The Writing Center’s manual, A Desk Guide to Business Grammar.

Effective Business Communications:  For more effective interaction with individuals and teams, how to (1) listen actively to gather information or receive feedback; (2) convey the intended message clearly and concisely; (3) build credibility and trust with an authentic, collegial, engaging communication style; and (4) select the best communication medium. Models and strategies to effectively receive and share information; answer inquiries with the appropriate level of detail; and handle difficult communication situations such as refusing a request, responding to a complaint, or rolling out a new program. Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on February 1, April 27, July 27, and October TBD, 2018.  Time: 8:30 arrival; course time 9:00-4:00.  Fee: $350 includes The Writing Center’s manual, The Art of Business Communication.

Effective Business Writing:  A review of strategies to increase the clarity, impact, and professionalism of emails, memos, letters, and reports. How to eliminate wordiness; reduce writing and rewriting time; organize, begin and end documents effectively; and present ideas strategically and diplomatically. How to recognize and correct the 10 most common errors in business documents.  Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on March 2, May 4, July 13, and September 7, 2018.  Time: 8:30 arrival; course time 9:00-4:30.  Fee: $350 includes The Writing Center’s manual, A Desk Guide to Business Writing.

Technical Writing:  How to write clear, understandable, well-organized emails, reports, manuals, procedures, and other technical documents. How to write for readers with varying expertise, emphasize important information, write executive summaries, present results and recommendations, and incorporate illustrations.  Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on March 14, 2018. Additional dates will be added throughout the year. Time: 8:30 arrival; course time 9:00-4:30.  Fee: $350 includes The Writing Center’s manual, A Desk Guide to Technical Writing.

Writing Effective Email/Email Etiquette:  A review of the latest email etiquette and standards. How to avoid 10 common email mistakes; ensure a clear, focused message; begin and end emails effectively; organize for greatest impact; and ensure professional presentation.  Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on April 12, July 26, and October 5, 2018.  Time: 8:30 arrival; course time 9:00-4:30.  Fee: $350 includes The Writing Center’s manual, Writing Effective Email.

Writing Effective Resumes/Resume Essentials:  How to write resumes that Application Tracking Systems select. How to draw the hiring manager’s attention to accomplishments and capabilities that match the desired position requirements. Review of resume and cover email/letter strategies that produce interviews and win jobs. Opportunity to receive instructor and peer feedback. Worksheets and checklists for post-class use. Writing Performance Appraisals:  How to write precise, objective, motivational performance appraisals. Three time-saving tips to streamline the performance appraisal process. How to selecting supporting detail to prove ratings and emphasize group objectives; use positive, reader-centered wording to ensure acceptance and motivate change; and write SMART action plans to meet developmental objectives.  Schedule: This one-day course will be presented on request.
